Lincoln - City and Cathedral

The Cloisters, Lincoln Cathedral

Lincoln Cathedral dominates the medieval city that surrounds it. Both provide views and images from the intimate to the grand. The Cathedral itself apparently so solid and permanent, changes subtly through the seasons. The Gothic splendour of the nave is even more impressive during Lent when it is empty and silent. The honey-coloured stone of the West Front comes alive as the setting winter sun catches it. The stain glass patterns across the floor and pillars change by the minute as the day moves on. Every visit reveals something changed and different.

New views open up around the city as the leaves fall or the summer sun lights up a shady street. Shops are often still on the original footprint of their Roman ancesters and bits of ancient wall and timberwork add a rich pattern to modern signs. Lincoln's abundance of medieval buildings and hidden gems make it a place of endless possibility.
